“Bigger brokerage firms have more clout with the suppliers.”
Insurance is a contract, not a social program. It is covered or it is not covered in accordance with the contract. Sometimes things are interpreted differently by the claimant and the insurance company, but that comes down settling the interpretation. The contract cannot be rewritten to cover the loss. We have to face it, when it comes right down to it, the insurance company is going to pay what the contract says it’s going to pay. Nobody has enough clout to change that. What does work in this situation is sophisticated knowledge, experience and an in-depth understanding of the mechanics of how insurance works. The higher levels of learning available in our industry serve us well in this regard. Look for letters behind the name of the person you’re dealing with. The unofficial benefit of all the foregoing is that it culminates in the ability to interpret the contract to the insurance company that wrote it in a way that demonstrates what the likely outcome will be and convincing them that the client’s point of view will prevail in the end. The insurance company has to trust the broker for this to happen. Clout will never get you there. Right now, the broker in Saskatchewan that possesses the most and highest designations in insurance works at Swift Insurance.
