Nowadays you can never be too safe about taking extra precautions to prevent vehicle theft. According to IBC a vehicle is stolen every 7 minutes in Canada alone! The result is over 200 cars are stolen every day. We have prepared a list of 5 rather simple ways to help prevent vehicle break in’s below:
1. Hide Anything of Value
This one is obvious, but before you leave your vehicle for the night check and make sure all things that are worth value are out of sight, even small amounts of change. People have broken into vehicles for 25 cents so make sure that you leave NO INCENTIVE that will attract the criminal into breaking into your vehicle
2. Security Stickers on the Windows
Especially if you have an alarm system on your vehicle, you should be placing the security stickers on your windows to ward off criminals and even if you don’t have a security system on your vehicle put those stickers on your windows as it is better than having nothing in place to prevent a break in.
3. Don’t Leave a Spare Key on the Vehicle
Yes locking your keys in a vehicle can be a real pain and nothing beats the convenience of having a spare hidden on your vehicle, but criminals are starting to catch onto this old trick. If your vehicle is not in a well-lit area with a good security system criminals will look all over the vehicle for these spare keys so it is in your best interest to not leave a spare key on the vehicle at all.
4. Steering Lock Bar
Steering wheel locks bars are extendable steel bars that can be locked in at a customized size to most steering wheels making your vehicle inoperable unless you have a key to unlock the bar. You can buy one of these at Amazon.ca for under $20.00 to have your vehicle appear and be super secure.
5. Park Smart
Park in well-lit areas or close enough that a motion sensor light will go off if someone comes anywhere near your vehicle. Parking in a garage would be the most ideal spot to keep your vehicle so if you have the option to use your garage use it!
